EBAY.ph: Auctions for Dummies

I have been making transactions over the internet for some years now. I love buying online because I actually get to find what I want easily. One of the best online communities I usually purchase from is Ebay.com. I can usually purchase products in Ebay for less than 50% of their market value here in the Philippines. It’s really the way to go.

However, buying online is not really appealing for everybody. One of the usual problems online buyers face is shipping costs. Most of the products people look for in the internet are usually located in the US. Often, the shipping costs make up for your discounted rates.

Enter Ebay.ph.

Philippine sellers accessible to Philippine buyers. Shipping costs can now be dispensed with by actually arranging for personal pick-ups. The thing is, in my opinion, Ebay.ph doesn’t work.

It doesn’t work because the discounts they offer are miniscule. Starting bids are really to laugh at starting often at already 75% of market value. In ebay.com, gadgets priced at 150 dollars start at 0.01 dollars.

One cent.

The Philippines isn’t really a discount-oriented nation. We can see this in mall-wide sales which boasts “up to 75% discount on selected products”. The key words there are “up to”. A lot of products are just tagged with 5-10% discounts. The 75% discount is usually for trash. In the United States, when they say “SALE”, they mean it. 50 dollar jeans can be bought for 6 dollars. And these jeans are of good quality.

If Ebay.ph can’t induce its sellers to sell at lower prices, there’s no way I can see Ebay.ph come even close to Ebay.com. And sellers won't really sell imported products at very good discounted rates.

Possible solution? Why not focus on Philippine made products to sell online? If they come straight from the factory, around 50% of total cost, which is usually used up to sell retail, can be discounted.

We need better discounts.
