Warning! Computer games are hazardous to your health

It is undeniable that computer games are fun. After a stressful day, some find playing computer games relaxing and engage in this pastime to relieve them of stress. This is easily observable in Network gaming shops which are likely to never run out of customers. It may be surprising to some that there are gamers who play even into the early hours of the morning. It is therefore natural to conclude that gamers may actually get “addicted” to playing computer games in the sense that addicts get hooked on illicit drugs.

In 2005, a Korean was reported to have died after playing computer games continually for 49 hours. After reading about something like this you can’t help but wonder if computer games should actually be labelled with a warning and be considered as a potential threat to the health of consumers. To an extent, computer games may be comparable to cigarettes due to their addictive nature and potentially harmful effects. The hazardous effects obviously are not only limited to poor performance in school or deterioration of social skills, but as pointed out in the article about the Korean, computer gaming may actually prove to be fatal in some instances. Moreover, there could also be other adverse physical effects caused by excessive gaming that we may currently be unaware of.

If there is an increasing number of health cases involving computer gaming it is possible that lawmakers may consider crafting legislation that would require manufacturers and distributors of computer games to include warning labels indicating that excessive use may be harmful. Well, gaming is still fun but like anything else it should be taken in moderation.
