FBI: FaceBook Investigation

Canadian woman loses benefits over Facebook photo.

It was an article on yahoo webpage this morning. It was about a woman on long-term sick leave for depression who lost her benefits because her insurance agent found photos of her on Facebook in which she appeared to be having fun at a bar, at her birthday party, and on a holiday. Her defense was that upon her doctor's advice, she tried to have fun.

Social networking sites have been increasingly being used by school administrations, employers and officers of companies, and law enforcement agencies as a source of information/evidence against users. Fourth year UP Law students are using Facebook to "investigate" about their OLA clients and opposing counsels! Haha.

Last week in class, we discussed about the legal and policy implications of technology. Indeed, things are happening so fast that it seems impossible to keep up.

Now, imagine opening your Facebook account and finding an invitation - not to connect to an acquaintance - but to show up in court. That may be the direction where we are headed, at least in the aftermath of a case in Australia, where a judge granted lawyers permission to serve defendants with a default judgment via Facebook.

Exciting huh?
