Faster Than A Speeding Bullet

Back in the day, gossipmongers would troop to their favorite parlors to get the latest news about the who’s who of Philippine society and show business. Nowadays, you don’t even need to wait for the gossip column hot off the press to read about the shenanigans of politicians caught in bed (yet again) with some wannabe actress/model. Thanks to technological evolution, gossipmongers are now attuned to the thoughts, activities, and scandals of celebrities (be it local or otherwise) every second of the day. Twitter, facebook and myspace are just some of the many social media networks ready to be exploited by the attention-seeking celebrities, and gossip-hungry adoring fans.

With just the click of a mouse, word spreads faster than a speeding bullet. As soon as Hubert Webb appeared in a televised press conference, he became the top trending topic on twitter (http://ph.news.yahoo.com/hubert-webb-tops-twitter-trends-netizens-debate-vizconde-053407339.html). The minute Hayden Kho’s laptop was hacked, his private home movies instantly became a blockbuster hit via internet streaming.

Because of improvements in technology, news travels faster. Could this possibly signal the end of paper broadsheets and consequently, the domination of social media network? Considering the number of twitter followers and people connected on facebook, it would appear to be so.
