Virtual “Pick Pocketing”

Smart Cards today are used to speed retail transactions, instead of the usual swiping of one’s credit card through a card reader, the technology allows the purchaser to wave the plastic in front of a scanner, no signature required.

The technology relies on Radio-frequency identification (RFID), this same technology is used in stores as security tags to ward off shoplifters., some countries embed it in their passports. The problem with this type of technology is that radio-frequency is always open to wireless access, thus with the right equipment absolutely anyone can read the data.

I was introduced to RFID in my Law on Natural Resources class last semester, the reported wanted to delve on matter of regulation and security when it comes to radio frequency waves. Due to the present technology, any one using RFID technology is at risk of being a victim to virtual pick pockets. Thieves have kept abreast with technology and used this so called convenience to the public against public itself.

Virtual pick pocketing is also termed card skimming, where the chip in your card that relies on RFID is being scanned for data which should only be available to the owner. See this news except: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uyeWSivAfEA, where it is shown how easily credit card thieves get credit card information without laying a hand on his victim. What’s funny about this news report though is that it turn into an advertisement towards the end. After showing the threat to possible credit card theft, he introduces a technology that can shield the theft.

I’ve never been so glad to not own a credit card.
