The Journey of humankind

Lately, I have been having a fix for science documentaries* about the origin of the universe and the nature of evolution. I spent one night staying up and watching the whole series called "EVOLVE." It's interesting how in the intricate process of biological development, us humans have somehow evolved into what we are now. In the evolutionary arms race, humans have selected the deadliest weapon ever: the human brain.

So how come we dominate this planet? It is because we have the most highly evolved brain in this planet. This is nothing new to you. This brain has allowed us to perform two important survival tasks. First, is to create tools, and Second, to hunt and survive in groups, or social behavior. Note that, physically, humans were no match before so many of beasts. We don't have claws, we don't have highly evolved super senses or super muscles. But we had very powerful biological computers. Our ability to improvise upon nature and capitalize on collective effort with deadly efficiency has allowed us to reach the pinnacle of the food chain. These two abilities, toolmaking and social skills, have allowed us to push the success of the human species. In the whole history of the planet, there has not been any other creature who has made an impact on an ecology like us. We now litter every nook and cranny of earth, and the night sky seen from above is a testament to our domination.

Where does the internet factor in? If we trace back our evolution of communication, right from the first sentence uttered from the human tongue, down to the internet age, we see an acceleration of some sort (what this acceleration is, I don't know what to call it.) With the ability to exchange information at such staggering rates, we are now able to continuously develop our species. If before back then (waaaay back then) we moved in tribes or in hunting groups, we now find ourselves able to move through these so called social networks. As a species, are reaping massive benefits in communication efficiency. It is not even fully developed yet!

Where is this progress and social mobility taking us? My answer? To the next level. This tool called the internet has cast a bright ray on what possibilities may be sparked by this constant interplay of technology and social behavior. And then, it is so much more than just that. The journey of humankind is really just a chapter in the whole story of the universe. It might just be one sentence or just one bit. From the clues that we have gathered from nature, evolution seems to be a good path to take. Many people are now poised to believe that aside from developing ourselves individually, it is also beneficial to REALLY develop nature and society. If one brain is powerful enough, what wonderful things we can create if we can meaningfully put it together, and act as one humanity.

Now that's a picture.
