Friendster then, Facebook now, GoogleMe later?

There have been rumors about Google preparing an attack on Facebook’s “territory”, under the name GoogleMe.

Since Google started, it has already taken over several companies, perhaps, the most popular of which is YouTube. Over the past decade it has already swallowed almost 70 companies. And just last month (August 2010), Google allegedly made some acquisitions which include Zynga, Slide and the like, which are related to social networking sites.

At present, Facebook seems to be the “standard” social networking site, purportedly with over 500 million users worldwide. Hence, if the rumors are true, Google would be fighting a tough battle with Facebook.

Looking back a few years earlier, Friendster enjoyed the limelight when it comes to social networking in the web. Yet in a short span of time, Facebook was able to snatch the throne from Friendster. Personally, I switched from Friendster to Facebook because I think FB has a more user-friendly interface, it is more efficient in finding contacts, it provides much easier photo sharing, and of course because there are lots of games!

Indeed, Google has the potential to make a powerful social networking site, given its continuous acquisition of the relevant technology it needs. If it could find a way to match the user friendly interface of FB and at the same time address privacy and security issues where FB falls short, then, FB’s reign might really come to an end. And of course, Google should not forget the Games.
