The Cory Magic

Former President Cory Aquino has done it again. The yellow mania has once again invaded our nation. This time it is not out of hatred or anger but an outpouring of thanks for what she has done for our nation. She inspired us to fight peacefully for our freedom and democracy. She continued to be there for us even as her term expired. We could very well say she was our moral compass, someone we turned to when our country needed a credible leader-the kind that had moral ascendancy. No matter what may be said of her administration or her policies then, she was and is loved by the Filipinos. A lot of people flocked her wake and the streets (for her funeral procession) once again to show support for her family and grieve their loss too.

Hers was the most documented and most followed wake and funeral. Pictures of her and people she encountered with were uploaded via Facebook, Multiply and the ABSCBN website. People were uploading videos on YouTube and updating their stats on Twitter. In fact, a friend of mine told me that when the funeral cortege was “lost” somewhere underneath the SLEX bridge, people were “twitting” each other about its location apart from sending SMS’s to each other. Of course, who could forget the 24-hour TV coverage and live streaming on the net of the wake! That’s technology aiding the making of history for us.

Unfortunately, there were some people who could not leave the “campaign mode” at home. They just had to take advantage of the media coverage and the large crowd for the exposure! They had to roll down their windows, shake hands and wave to everyone. Tch. Couldn’t they respect the occasion at least? For that, I’m deleting that candidate from my Facebook account.

I’m sure that this feeling of patriotism will linger for a couple of more days and then become dormant after a while until something or someone triggers it. But let us not look at Kris or Noynoy to replace their mom. It would be like taking advantage of the situation if we prod them to run for office or even insinuate that they should run for (higher) office. For now, let us leave them be and let them grieve.

Thank you, President Cory. You were the first president I came to know. I was a young girl then and you inspired me to become president mainly because I wanted to be one of the countries female presidents after you. But, now, I instead wish to be the next and first female Chief Justice. (Yeah, I dare to dream. Free naman! =p) You now have your happy ending albeit it’s in the after life. Enjoy endless dates with your Ninoy. That’s your most deserved reward. RIP. =)

Btw, it would be an honor to brag to everyone that the first female Chief Justice was my "bus mate" in law school. Hahaha!
