Its official.. once you post on FB

I find it extremely funny that upon breaking up, one would immediately change her status in Facebook. It’s posting to the entire online community, “Hey, it’s official. I’m single again!” That online status then becomes a fodder for gossip in all mediums of communication. A friend may first see it online but then she will spread it via txt, email or it may even be done personally. Haha.

Lawrence Lessig’s talk mentioned that some people had an adverse reaction to progress since the critics were scared that with technological progress, our way of life would disintegrate. What got to me was his comment regarding how in the olden days, teens would congregate outside their houses, enjoy each other’s company and sing. But with the invention of canned music, people no longer saw the need to share their lives that way.

Now, we share our lives not just through face-to-face communication but we also exploit other venues that are as affective in getting the point across. Communication does not necessarily have to be done face-to-face in order to be meaningful. Keeping each other informed by posting our life’s status or maybe the day’s feeling online and commenting on other’s pages is enough to keep in touch. I guess that’s why the saying “I’m only a txt/ call away” became so popular because we acknowledge that these technologies have evolved to become part of our lives and werecognize that these means are one of the ways that we share our lives with others.
