Public Service on the Net

Yesterday, I was browsing through some government websites. From what I observed, the sites serve only as a poster ad failing to provide the information needed. It begs the question – whether or not the public officers and employees even know the purpose of a website.

Websites by government offices should contain the much needed information for which people go to their offices in the first place.

One good model is that of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI). The website of the department contained a lot of essential information from administrative matters to giving primers on how to start one’s business. I particularly appreciate the latter part. The department took the extra mile in ensuring that entrepreneurs and businessmen would be given all the help that they could get.

For other government websites, all I see are faces and messages of the heads of the office. It appears that the websites are used more for promotional and advertisement purposes than serving the people. Somebody in MalacaƱang should do something about this.
