Discovering Stars

It’s common knowledge that I’m a frustrated singer a.k.a. people get frustrated when I sing. Without miss, I get standing ovation during block karaoke sessions mostly because they want me to sit down already, and my proposals to tryout for Charivari get turned down at least once a sem.

In 2006, Charice Pempengco lost a local singing competition and thought her music career was over. But thanks to YouTube, a clip of her singing Jennifer Holliday's "And I'm Telling You I am Not Going" caught the attention of TV host Ellen DeGeneres and Grammy award winning producer David Foster. There’s also Arnel Pineda who was discovered by Neal Schon, founder and guitarist of the rock band Journey, from downloading a clip of Pineda singing their hit “Faithfully’ on YouTube. The band flew him to San Francisco for an audition and he thereafter became their new frontman.[1] Of course, everyone also knows Justin Bieber. The latter was discovered in 2008 by Scooter Braun who also came across Bieber’s YouTube videos, arranged for Bieber to meet with Usher, and the former thereafter signed with RBMG, a joint venture between Braun and Usher.

YouTube is now the place to be if one wants a “cyber break” or a shot at being discovered as the next singing sensation. Of course there are also posts that get millions of hits not because they sing well but because they sing funny. I foresee I’ll fall under the latter category so maybe I should think about this some more. :p
