(#12) of Love and other Games *

I just recently watched the movie Fight Club (better late than never) and what struck me the most was the point about our increasing consumerism. Among those which we buy or use are games – video games, online games, mobile phone games, etc.

Although many of us are mere players, it’s a good thing that we have many artists and IT professionals and enthusiasts who are into game development, which is an industry ripe with so much potential and opportunities since Filipinos are creative and talented.

This realization led to the creation of the Game Developers Association of the Philippines (GDAP). It partners with the International Game Developers Association (IGDA) Manila Chapter to bring about the Manila Game Jam held annually every January in UP ITTC, UP Diliman. It is part of the Global Game Jam’s worldwide experiment in computer game creation. In this event, game developers explore ideas in game design over a span of 48 hours. The Philippines is one of the few Asian nations currently participating in the Global Game Jam, alongside Japan, Korea, Malaysia and Singapore.

I hope that we can cultivate more innovations and creations so we can be producers and not merely end-users.

* According to Lady Gaga and countless others, love is game. I don’t think so but I just thought of the title based on Gabriel Garcia Marquez’ Of Love and Other Demons, and the movie Love and Other Drugs since Valentine’s is just 5 days away.
