Activision announced that they would be closing their Guitar Hero franchise. This meant that gamers had to say goodbye to the Band Hero franchise as well because it is an offshoot of Guitar Hero. Activision will no longer be developing the game.
The good news? Rock Band wins the years-long battle on which music game is better. However, even Rock Band may find itself struggling with the same dilemma that Band Hero contended with. The biggest reason Band Hero was shut down was because the developers were so slow in expanding the songlist. More importantly, developers weren't adding songs that were contemporary and chart-topper hits. This significantly reduced gamer enjoyment and use of the game. Rock Band is more efficient than Band Hero in developing its song list but it's still too slow to keep up with the attention span of its users.
The developers should take a crash course lesson from the music game god Kumyoung. Oh yes, videoke still reigns supreme in the contest of creating an up-to-date and community-relevant songlist. That is why videoke joints still don't go out of style and spring up in practically every stretch of highway whereas Rock Band settles in hole-in-the-wall cafes and Band Hero gets tossed in the trash. Developing a good game is only half the battle. From that point on the developer has to collaborate with users to ensure game survival.
