Palindromes and Other Viral Ads

A "palindrome" is a word or phrase the letters of which, when taken in reverse order, give the same word or phrase. Its basically a line that reads the same backward and forward like "was it a rat i saw?"

Just recently, renowned pop singer Rihanna lauched her new Reb'l Fleur perfume with a promotional video that went viral, created by a New York ad agency: Droga 5.

The creators are calling the one-minute video as a palindrome as the site allows the user to scroll the video either forward or backwards, as its shot to play perfectly both ways. The video opens with a split-screen image of dual Rihannas and users can move the cursor to the left where it leads to a dark-bad-girl version of the singer, or to the right towards the good-light-girl version.

This ad was watched 500,000 times in less than 3 days and they are predicting that it will be viewed as much as 20 million times. This is not farfetched as the adorable mini-darth vader ad of Volkswagen was viewed 29 million times on youtube in less than 2 weeks.

With the success of viral marketing, many companies have shifted to online ads. "who needs TV time when millions of people are clicking on the online ad you posted for free?"
