DFA's E-Passport

It's rare do I get to read commendations given to a government agency with respect to ICT innovations and development. Recently, the International Civil Aviation Organization has praised the efforts of the Department of Foreign Affairs in implementing the electronic passport project (e-passport project) (See Inquirer website).

The e-passport project has been one of the top projects of the DFA. Obviously, this is in response to the amount of passports being processed by the department for several years. After all, there are so many Filipinos who seek opportunities abroad for lack of them here in the Philippines. This e-passport is at least a small help from the Government, which is unable to provide its people with employment.

Other government agencies should also upgrade their system. They should take advantage of the technological developments and innovations in order to provide speedy, adequate and reliable services. After all, it is a constitutional mandate imposed upon public officers to serve the people "with utmost resopnsibility, integrity, loyalty, and efficiency" (Sec. 1, Art. XI).
