Renting your Island: Just Note

Renting an island as advertised in www.privateislandsonline.com seems to be a dream come true. Still, caution should be exercised.

While it is apparent that the website is an online bulletin of islands for rent and/or for sale, the information given on any island is provided by the “owner” or the “owner’s broker” themselves. Unfortunately, the genuineness of their claims (ie. ownership over an island in the Pacific) is not verified by the website administrators. Therefore, an interested lessor or buyer, who relies on their representations, does so at his own risk. In fact, the website’s Disclaimer page gives the same message. It provided the following: “Private Islands Online (PIO) makes no warranty or representation, expressed or implied, as to the accuracy of information contained in advertisements.” Moreover, it stated that “PIO is not engaged in the negotiation of transactions on behalf of any party and visitors to the site are advised to conduct any negotiation with agents or legal counsel of their choosing.”

So if you’re seriously planning to spend your vacation Survivor-style via this website, you might as well exercise due diligence in ensuring that the transaction/s you’ll enter are legal and binding. This way, you’d be sparing yourself from potential headaches and you’ll be truly enjoying your time away from the rest of civilization.
