Lately, some organizations conducted a study of the possible privacy violations committed by Facebook, a social networking site. According to their report, Facebook user who avails of third-party applications on the site, including the popular quizzes, may unconsciously giving out personal information to the developers of these quizzes and other applications. It is said that Facebook’s default privacy settings allow nearly unfettered access to a user’s profile information, like religion, sexual orientation, political affiliation, and many more.
Because of these concerns, Facebook has agreed to make significant enhancement in the next few months. This would include clarifying its private policy so that users can clearly understand why personal information like date of birth is requested, the difference between deactivating and deleting an account, and how its advertising works. Another key amendment is that Facebook will retrofit its application platform in order to prevent developers from accessing users' personal information -- unless users provide explicit consent.
