Murder he Facebook-ed

Throughout this semester, my classmates and I have talked about people getting conned, stalked, and fired (or not getting hired) because of Facebook. Recently though, another Facebook news made it big, thus earning a spot in this blog.

Last September 1, a man from South Wales faced the jury for allegedly strangling and stabbing his common law wife early this year. The man reportedly resented the amount of time his partner was spending on Facebook and her being secretive about her account. Ten days after the victim changed her status from married to single, she was found dead. A similar case happened in London last year where a man stabbed his wife to death after she changed her status to single, which, according to the assailant, “made him look like a fool.”

We have learned from The Big Bang Theory (remember S02E09?), and by the sheer number of likes and comments that these updates get, that changing your Facebook status is a big deal. Apparently, it’s such a big deal that people kill over it (because dropkicking via Superpoke is not enough to avenge a bruised ego). Is this an indication of how much Facebook is ingrained in our lives? People actually lose their heads, literally and figuratively, over updates! And of these Facebook murder trials, can the Facebook page be presented in court to establish motive?

Hopefully, this is just a British thing. As opposed to the Filipino thing, which is getting killed over a song. Which one is worse? Go figure.
