Technology really has gone very far for the motion picture industry, not only in terms of movie-making, but also in viewer experience - True 1080p High Definition picture qualityand 5.1 and 7.1 surround audio.
Now, there's SMELLIT.
According to articles I found (http://www.slipperybrick.com/2009/02/smellit-concept-makes-cheech-and-chong-worth-watching/ ; and http://www.coolest-gadgets.com/20090213/smellit-now-you-can-smell-your-favorite-film/ ), a device is now under development that would let the viewer smell what is played on screen.
The device would have over 100 cartridges containing basic aromas, and depending on the data in your media, it would release these aromas to create and release the smell corresponding to the scene being shown. If things push through as planned, the device would simply be attached to your media player and all systems go.
Honestly, I'm not sure if this is a good idea. Right, it would be great if you're watching a scene involving food, or a scene involving perfume, or better yet, a scene in the great outdoors. It would be a real trip to take a whiff of those virgin rain forests or the great seas on Discovery Channel. But, what about those zoos and wild animals on Animal Planet, or that program "Dirty Jobs", or worse, that scene in Slumdog Millionaire?
This just goes to show how quickly technology is developing, and while the intentions are good, it may lead to horrendous applications.
Can you just imagine the stink that will be left clinging on to your furniture and clothing? Yikes!
