future of data storage - GO ONLINE

by Rowena Ricalde (twelfth entry)

cave walls. oracle bones. animal skins. papyrus. paper. paper. paper. hard drive. diskette. cd. usb. and now ONLINE.

humans have always been fascinated by information. and because of this overflowing need for information, humans have to find a way to store such information. our brain can only do so much storage. and, obviously, there is a limitation as to the number of cave walls, oracle bones and even paper that we could write on. humans have to think bigger and more economical. and that is why we came up with electronic data storage systems.

but clearly, because there is no more monopoly on information, people want more access to information. hard drives, cds, diskettes and usbs are certainly not enough. not only individuals, but companies, governments and other large entities that want to efficiently use information WANT MORE.

and that is why, data storage has to go ONLINE.

GOODBYE email attachments, yousendit, sharepoints and usbs.
HELLO to insync.

this small Filipino company has been developing the technology to enable individuals and especially entities to synchronize their data. anywhere in the world, a company can access whatever files they have and update such files real time. so another person from the same company can access already the updated data. it is as if a company have one and the same hard drive but online.

what will they think of next.

I think if you're going to save data online, you still need to have a backup in other websites or in other storage devices. I've uploaded files (mostly notes and reviewers) in Scribd.com but recently I can't access the site. I don't know if it's my laptop or it's Google Chrome or something...but it sucks. :)

this is cool. but again, privacy concerns. or confidentiality issue for that matter. i dunno how this really works, but what if i wanted to store data which will be strictly for personal use, in that i don't want anybody to update or edit it?

hehe. mali pala. inexplain ni moi na ang important pala dito is KNOWING that there is a change in a file in the system and if you want to accept such change para hindi na nageemail etc. lalo eg sa ola yung mga draft ng pleading etc. bale, isysync lang yung mga files as they are updated by the people in the network. the files are still in the persons pc. it's just a matter of syncing the files.

now, the blog post i made is about cloud storage. ill explain in a later post. hindi pa kasi uso sa pinas ang cloud storage pero sa japan and most developed countries, eto na ginagawa nila.
