The World on a Screen

Everyone is always saying that globalization has made the world smaller. The Internet has done away with the geographical and physical barriers that used to separate people in the countries the world over. But nothing encapsulates this concept more than Google Earth. This program actually makes the world small enough to fit on your computer screen! And new developments have actually made them small enough to fit on the screen of your iPhone. See, you can have the world in the palm of your hand. Hehehe.

Google Earth is a program which acts as a virtual globe, map and geographic information program. It maps the planet by the superimposition of images obtained from such sources as satellite imagery and aerial photography. Agencies in the United States such as NASA have contributed to the development of this system, providing them with images of various parts of the world, in both 2D and 3D. A new version that was released in 2008 now allows viewers to have a street level view in certain location. Ocean floor imagery is also available.

For all those who want to see the world but can’t afford to, this program is just the thing for you. It doesn’t even matter which country you’re in because the program comes in 37 languages. So click away and enjoy!
