Privacy Deleted

A secret joke meant to be shared among intimate friends … an embarrassing picture that should have been deleted the minute it was captured … a whispered comment made about your “best” friend … all of them revealed for the world to relish and take enormous delight in.

Nothing is sacred when it comes to the internet. There is no such thing as privacy. The minute you upload a picture, or email a scathing commentary about a particular acquaintance, chances are 90% that it will probably reach the rest of the world.

The internet is full of tales and woes of internet humiliations. Harry Fildes lost his job when a confidential and derogatory email about his ex-girlfriend went viral. Karen Owen instantly became an unwilling celebrity when her F*ck List caught the attention (and imagination) of the world, as she recounted in explicit detail her sexual conquests and romps with a number of Duke University’s athletes.

In a world without borders, privacy can be said to be a thing of the past. So, the next time you upload a picture … the next time you email a friend, think about the words you say or the pictures you send. Who knows? It just might become the next internet viral sensation.
