Facebook and E-Commerce

In a recent article on CNN.com, Caroline McCarthy wrote, “Facebook is turning up the heat on becoming a big player in the online payments world…” as can be seen in “…a couple of job postings for a new ‘Facebook Payment Operations’ team that recently appeared on its site.” Actually, Facebook has already experimented with e-commerce, mostly with "Gift Shop" not so long ago. But this is a big step

Of course, there may be some technical or management difficulties to this project. First, as pointed out in the article, is that: “The bigger Facebook gets, the more difficult it becomes for it to launch something completely new -- just look at how much prelude was required for the rollout of the social network's new privacy settings, which proved controversial regardless.” Second, “whether the focus of the completed Facebook payments product will be as geared toward the social gaming industry.”

Regardless of the obstacles, this is another big step forward towards progress in terms of global e-commerce. It may take some for this to operate smoothly, but it is a progress nonetheless. If all goes well, I can just imagine the convenience and ease. Who knows, not so long from today, I will find myself sitting pretty at home or at some beach, Facebook-ing while doing business on the same site.
