The Vicious Pack Behavior

Newsflash. There is a phenomenon in the internet described as the “vicious pack behavior” of people on blogs, forums and social networking sites.

It is not uncommon to see an author of a blog site lambasted by anonymous persons for some article that he posted. The criticisms can range from a simple pointing out of errors, factual or grammatical, to an uncalled for attack on the person of the writer himself. And of course, there is the long list of cuss words and other unsavory invectives that punctuate these attacks.

Indeed, the anonymity afforded by the internet can go both ways: It can provide people with a seemingly unfettered freedom to be who they want to be (something which they could not do in the real world) without being criticized or persecuted. On the other hand, it can make it easy for people to cast their unbridled tongues (or in this case, unbridled fingers) whichever way they want, leaving behind things like common courtesy, politeness and respect when they deal with one another in the web.

Despite the wide windows of freedom that we have because of the internet, it is still important to remember that even in the digital world, humanity is still in play.
