loss of core functionalities

Back in the day, I know all the telephone numbers of my classmates by heart. There was no need to consult my phonebook or PDA so that I could contact them. But somehow, due to the major technological developments in the past few years it seems to me that people are growing over-dependent upon technology and that we are starting to lose some of our core functionss as humans. I noticed that for the younger generation, memorization is not as big as it was before. Besides, everything (well, not really) is just a google search away anyway.
My point: there should be some law which imposes the inclusion in regular school curricula of a subject which aims to develop and preserve some if not most of our core functions
