Top 10 Internet Scams of 2009----

Given that we are about to discuss the topic of cybercrimes, I decided to look for an interesting article regarding cybercrimes. I landed on an interesting article written by Matthew Moore for the telegraph.co.uk. The article is entitled Top 10 Internet Scams of 2009.

The list is made by E-victims.org, an organization that helps prevent cybercrimes.

It was said that people are currently vulnerable due to the financial stress caused by the economic downturn of most of the world's major economies. People looking for the light tend to gamble more in life, the prospect of gaining much while only giving a little clouds the mind.

The list of the top 10 internet scams is as follows:

1. Identity theft and phishing- personal data being stolen online

2. Viruses and spyware- sending viruses through websites, even videos that are viewed are used to ember such

3. Advance fee scam- you are said to win something but you have to pay a fee to get the bogus prize

4. Work at home and job scams- bogus job offered for a minimal fee

5. Fake or spoofed websites- retailing online for products that are not to be delivered and the website becomes closed

6. Economy related scams- offer to help financially for a price but offer does not materialize (i.e. loan payment)

7. Classified ads and auction scams- fraudster buying online then sending a cheque with the amount more than what is bought then asking for the remaining "change" to be returned hoping that the cheque hasn't been discovered to be fake yet

8. Holiday scams- holiday getaways offered for an amazing low-rate which is bogus

9. Ticket scams- fake tickets for concerts, sporting events, and other events sold online

10. Social networking- hacking of accounts that is used to ask for help to connected networks (i.e. asking for money because of emergency; ala dugo-dugo gang)

Hopefully the transfer of knowledge would help prevent such crimes from happening. One must be vigilant and remember that an offer that is too good to be true, indeed isn't true.
