American Idol and the Philippine Elections

Watching American Idol got me thinking about the system of voting for the candidates by text messaging or by phone calls. It made me wonder if it would be a great idea to use such a system to elect our government officials.

It would be a more democratic election, as it seems that everyone in the Philippines has a cellphone, or access to a telephone. Voter turnout would be better, as people could cast their ballots just sitting on their asses in the toilet. It would also mean that absentee voting laws would not be needed because even Filipinos overseas can vote through text or call. The possibility of cheating would be slimmer, as it would be difficult for those corrupt candidates to rig an electronic election.

But then, the fact is that not every Filipino has a cellphone. And the requirement of having a phone or access to it would mean that there would be a property requirement for the exercise of the right of suffrage, and this would be unconstitutional. Our people would also be apprehensive about how efficient the system would be, as our country doesn’t really have a fantastic record of being tech-savvy.

Just look at the UP Computerized Registration System.
