porn musings..

I just saw tropic thunder on pirated dvd last night and I chuckled when one of the characters in the movie said that the winner of video platform wars is always determined by the porn industry. This means that the format selected by the major pornographic companies in the US always dominate the market. I do not know, of course, if any of these facts as mentioned in the movie is true but it certainly made me think about the way the pornographic industry has successfully fought its way through the hearts and minds of its captive audience even amidst all the governmental regulation especially pornographic videos that are found online. Interestingly, most web sites offering pornographic videos for profit seem to survive the onslaught of recession and the proliferation of free pornographic videos. Is online pornography now considered an inelastic good? The dot.com bubble of the 90's already burst but nobody has managed to wage a successful crackdown against the internet porn barons. What could their secret be?

I think that that observation is true if this article (http://www.macworld.com/article/50627/2006/05/pornhd.html) is any indication. In the 80s, it was the Beta v. VHS wars, and now it's the BluRay v. HD-DVD format wars. BluRay won but I don't think it's just the porn industry this time but more of Sony's clever marketing of the PS3 as an affordable BluRay player. I don't think it's just the format wars where the porn industry has a major influence in, but in cyberspace too. Porn is probably one of the main reasons why internet access has been improving exponentially - bigger bandwidth, cheaper service - all good for us end-users.
