Sex Offenders Purged From MySpace -----

I read an article that over 90,000 sex offenders (wow, that's alot) on MySpace have been removed from the website. This is interesting because indeed, Social Networking websites that are created for young people to connect with each other has been a magnet for sexual predators. Creating a need for the websites to self-monitor itself.

Law Enforcers have tapped this websites to help in preventing sexual offenders from predating minor online users. Luckily, MySpace has been cooperative with law enforcers in the fight against the sexual predation of children.

How do they do filter membership? According to MySpace they use Sentinel SAFE, a database created in 2006 that culled the names, physical descriptions, and identifiable characteristicsof sex-offenders that is used to cross-reference the members of MySpace to it. This is the reason why creating accounts on this websites require verification of user identity and age.

This reminded me of the Online Safety Tips that I read before which enumerated the following:
1. Parents should not allow their kids to go to chat rooms
2. That they should only instant message kids that they know in real life
3.cyber-bullying should always be reported, parents calling the perpetrators parents
4.tell the kids to never give out personal information
5. and finally, to use web-filtering softwares.

The article that I read ended it by saying that parents should treat the internet as an unsupervised playground in a sketchy neighborhood. That really is quite a visual that would make one be always watchful of their children.

It is important for parents to not only allow the technology, such as web filtering, to do all the work for them. Technology should be viewed as a tool to help parents keep their kids safe but not as a silver bullet. Livia Web Protection is a new web filter for the home that utilizes the filtering technology from Websense - this software serves as a great barrier between kids and the bad stuff/people that are online. Parents should let their kids know that they have installed filtering software on the machines and utilize the software to help support the families rules to surfing the web.
