Hello Philippines Mabuhay!

My sort-of-boyfriend’s brother is really cute. He is from Holland and is currently touring around Asia. For his Philippine trip, I was assigned by their mother to be his tour guide. Being the hermit that I am, I didn’t know the first thing about showing anybody around the Philippines as I have only memorized the nooks and crannies of my Lilliputian apartment. And what’s more is that Cute Dutch Boy wants to experience the true Filipino culture, not the same old tourist traps featured in common travel magazines. I say, okay, fine, I can do this. I’m Pinoy. That shouldn’t be too difficult.

At first I ended up just showing him the usual stuff: beaches, bitches and coconuts. But of course, that gets boring pretty quickly. So to spice up the tour, I went online and did some research about the ordinary things we locals tend to ignore. Stuff like the history of the Philippines, stories about balut, how much money do garbage-diggers make, which places to go when you want to get mugged, and other matters that seem mundane at first glance.

By going online, I became an expert on the Philippines in just a few clicks. And by giving Cute Dutch Boy a tour, I had the opportunity of seeing the country in a whole new light. It is amazing how rich our culture is, and I’ve only browsed through a few webpages. Imagine if one studies it more, then everyone can be an instant expert tour guide.
