Happy birthday Wikipedia, Ken Chu

Today, January 15, marks the 7th birthday of the popular online encyclopedia Wikipedia. For those who do not know, it is a free service which provides information about anything. The name is derived from the Hawaiian word for “quick” – wiki, and “encyclopedia”. Founded by Jimmy Wales, it was created with a vision of a world "in which every single person on the planet is given free access to the sum of all human knowledge." Writing for this encyclopedia is voluntary and there is neither payment involved nor credit to be given to the author. The information and photos here can be copied and used by anyone without infringement.

Although the ease of access of Wikipedia makes it widely used, it is criticized for being not authoritative, since it allows anyone claiming to be expert on a particular topic to write or edit an entry. To deal with this issue, it has a dedicated pool of volunteers who regulate the submissions. So exercise discretion in accepting information.

Happy birthday also to Ken Chu, the F4 member who played Xi Men in Meteor Garden. And last year, he played next to Iza Calzado in the film “Batanes: Sa Dulo ng Walang Hanggan.” He is now 30 years old.

Your post reminded me of a class we had with Justice VV Mendoza. The class was on Judicial Review and if i remember correctly, the topic that day was the different principles of JRev. Wikipedia came up because a few days before, a Supreme Court decision came out which cited the site as a source. I guess, if the Supreme Court, the highest court of the land, recognizes the credibility of Wikipedia, then all other entities can defer to it as well.

Personally, though, i am wary about the information available in wikipedia since it allows random editing. In the end, individual discretion and caveat will have to be exercised.
